Who is the fella in the Big White Hat?

When I was a kid, I would watch the reruns on TV. I was enthralled by Marshall Dillon, Wyatt Earp and The Lone Ranger. This was not a bad thing. It taught me about having heroes. It taught me about living by a code.

As I grew up I decided these role models and codes were even more important for a man than a boy. I also never gave up my love for the idyllic cowboy.

I enjoy the old Oaters. Tom Mix, Hoot Gibson, Buck Jones, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and the rest still hold a special place in my heart. In some ways I’ll never grow up.

At age 20 I was born again and began my life imitating Jesus Christ, the ultimate Hero. I understand that the Bible contains the ultimate code. I am amazed about how much the codes of those old movie heroes are based on Biblical Principles.

That was a very formative year for me. I became a father then I became a Christian. Becoming a Christian did not sit well with my girlfriend. That relationship spun apart at high speed. I moved back home to Odessa Texas and found my roots. I bought a Big White Hat reminiscent of those movie heroes. I still wear that hat. I still try to live up to that ideal. I don’t always make it. After all, this aint the movies.

So I filed a paternity suit and set my mind to helping my little girl (Dezzie) as much as I could in the time the court allowed me. She has grown up a lot. She comments on this blog and I post about her from time to time. I like her a little.

Pretty soon my high school sweetheart found me. We never really stopped loving each other. She came with my stepdaughter Jacqui. I sort of like that one a little too. That sweetheart married me. We have three children together; Alex, Tiger and Zoe. I like them a little.

We live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex. We love God. We love each other. We love Texas. We love this country.

My wife talked me into blogging. When I needed a name, I could not think of anything more fitting than to name my blog and adopt the pseudonym Big White Hat.

I like to write about my family. I like to write about character. I like to write about manhood. I like to write about life in general. Tiger is autistic so I like to write about autism. I purposely avoid politics. There are millions of other folks that do that very well.

If you decide to leave a comment, be friendly. I don’t suffer fools. I manage my comment threads unapologetically with extreme prejudice. I am the law here. Miscreants get run off without a trial.

I’m glad that you stopped by, amigo. I look forward to getting to know you.
